Victoria Beckham’s show had a cinematographic quality about it. It had a narrative, a story. The looks alternating on the runway were like the links in a story. A recurring theme was chains. They appeared as texture on sleek, fluid seventies dresses. As an oversize intarsia on warm jumpers in earthy tones. As a composition of sequins on immaculate pencil skirts worn with extra-large cardigans. As a delicate silvery print over dresses, elongated teardrop necklines, mid-calf length skirts, blouses and light drapes. The silhouettes varied from body-con to soft via high-waist trousers, sharp-shouldered blazers, tapered little lozenge knits and big pointed collars. Tweed, argyle and tailoring fabrics defined the more structured pieces. Overcoats featuring a loop of fabric around the shoulders like the link in a chain were worn over skilfully hand-embroidered dresses with nocturnal reflections.
