Simone Rocha reflected her recent motherhood in her latest collection, showing matronly transparent robes with floral embroidery in a concentration of ethereal femininity. But the designer did not only show the joyful side to pregnancy and childbirth; she also expressed fear, anxiety and pain through frayed and/or holey knitted dresses like spider webs – all rigorously black but with iridescent effects. The mood was also given a medical/surgical aspect, with aprons layered over dresses, caps and ribbons at the neck reminiscent of Victorian age nurse uniforms, like the almost spectral figures in the hospitals of the time. A fairy tale with a touch of gothic horror, translated into textures, materials and incisive details.
