It’s not hard to see why Junya Watanabe’s new man collection was entitled ‘Faraway’. You only had to see the refined African accessories embellishing the looks, bone necklaces, bracelets, ruffs and various fetishes, as well as elaborate Afro hair. The Western style clothes – suits, blazers worn with turned-up jeans, overcoats, shirts and bermuda shorts, with a few fringed ponchos worn like a sarong – were given colourful patchworks (reminiscent of traditional Japanese ‘boro’) made with fabrics by Vlisco, the Dutch company that has used batik techniques to create Africa-inspired fabrics in warm colours since 1846. Bow ties, Panama hats and classic lace-ups gave this man the allure of a refined explorer.
