Julien Macdonald’s dresses are made for dreams and for the red carpet. It’s hard to imagine these sparkly sheaths being worn in everyday life, but that isn’t the Welsh designer’s intention anyway. Inspiration came from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, which Macdonald dipped into to build a collection for sexy warriors armed with sequins, spangles and swarovski crystals. Gold, white, bronze, black and red all featured, but the real colour was light. Strategic cuts, transparencies, mesh, trains and embroidery played with seduction without being brazen. Daring necklines, cut-outs at the sides and super-tight jumpsuits and trousers revealed the perfect body beneath. The shine was certainly dazzling, but if you could see the clothes up close or touch them it’s the craftsmanship textures that would stand out.
