An all-black & white collection from Balmain, in which creative director Olivier Rousteing declared his love for France and showed his support for newly elected President Emmanuel Macron, whom he had openly backed during the campaign. And what better to channel this Francophile’s love than Breton stripes, which Rousteing used to decorate classic crew neck knits and wraparound sweaters with deep V necklines, cadet jackets embellished with chains, maxi T-shirts – all worn over skinny trousers and boots with metal toe caps. Elsewhere, baroque swirls inspired by French interiors were featured on overcoats, boxy and biker jackets, shirts and knits, often layered over one another. But there was also lots of America in this collection, another of Rousteing’s passions made evident by the use of stars and stripes, fringes and Texan ties – given a deluxe update with the leather ‘cord’ replaced by a metal one.
