With this collection Alexander Wang marked a new beginning and a new identity in his career as a designer, as he wrote in the show notes. He wanted to convey that he has ‘come back home’, where ‘home’ is understood as being family, origin and roots. So many designers include personal references and family experiences in their collections. Wang had not yet done so. Perhaps that’s what he means by a ‘new beginning’. The collection was a melting pot of American culture, as seen by the designer as a teenager, so there were Axl Rose bandanas and cropped perfecto jackets, football jerseys, leather shorts and mini-skirts with branded belts, bombers and sweatshirts. Surgical masks decorated with studs and safety pins recalled street gangs while oversize tailoring, cheeky lingerie, military and, naturally, stars and stripes also featured.
