New York demands elegance. Yet it also demands originality, imagination, luxury and seduction – and all with the greatest simplicity. In short, a collage of styles. Something that suits the ladies of the Upper East Side (never over the top) and their rebel rock-chick daughters, the it-girls of the moment and those who are mad about sport and want to be chic even when they run (and sweat) in Central Park. A challenge which is anything but easy for the designer, who takes the task on by endowing garments with the infallible weapon of personality. A many-sided, multi-faceted personality: intrigued by other cultures and realities, so far away, but with feet firmly on the ground in everyday life, drawn to men’s style, boy for girl, yet (or maybe exactly because of this) so devilishly feminine and seductive. Then what? Naturally elegant and the epitome of class, yet never over the top. Fashion is turning chic, at least here in the Big Apple.
To find the snug coats and jackets of the Altuzarra collection we need to go as far as the Atlas Mountains, home to the Berbers. It is the traditional clothing of this North African tribe that inspires the stylist: the thick wools; the jangling metal on skirt hems, necks and high sashes tied tightly at the waist; the colourful prints; the embroidery; and the decoration.
